Have Older Siblings Read to Their Younger Siblings
Having siblings read to each other is great practice for big brothers or sisters to explain unfamiliar words or summarize the story. It’s also an opportunity to demonstrate a love of reading for little brothers and sisters.
When one sibling reads to another, the child reading aloud gets lots of oral practice especially when reading fluently and with expression. Being a fluent reader helps with reading speed and comprehension of the story.
The listening sibling also benefits from hearing book language, which builds their listening vocabulary and strengthens their listening attention. They also have a model for what a fluent reader sounds like when reading.
